Citing Images from the ARTstor Database

The basic information about the image you’ll need for citing in APA format is:

  • Artist's name
  • Title of work
  • Type of work, for example painting, sculpture, online image
  • Date of work

Some works won’t have an artist name. For those images use the title of the image in place of an artist name. See the following example:
Reference list citation:
Aeneas wounded, and healed by Venus (Doctor Iapygius removing an arrow from the leg of Aeneas). (c. 50-79 CE). [Painting]. Retrieved from www.artstor.org

In-text citation:
(Aeneas wounded, and healed by Venus, c. 50-79 CE)

For images with the name of the artist, use the following example format:
Reference list citation:
Hopper, E. (1942). Nighthawks. [Online image]. Retrieved from www.artstor.org

In-text citation:
(Hopper, 1942)

If you have any questions about how to cite an image, contact an Alverno College librarian.
